Beta 1.5_01

Just a day after Beta 1.5 was released Mojang released a patch for this update. Via the forums I had heard of a few glitches and these have been fixed by this patch. This almost instantaneous fixing of problems shows Mojang really care about its people and that they actually do listen to people.

Some of the Changes Include:
  • Wolves are less common
  • Rain doesn't go through translucent blocks
  • Blocks can now be placed on snow

Stats in Beta 1.4

Stats were added along with Achievements in the 1.4 update. It can be accessed in the pause menu and is a very welcome addition.

I'll start of with the negatives. I don't know if they could have implemented this but all of the stats did not include previously completed tasks. For example all stats start out at 0 even on words where you could have been playing for 100+ hours. As a result this doesn't truly reflect how much time and effort you have put into the game.

Now the positives: The range of statistics is enormous. It measures how many times you craft, get or use each item. It also includes distance  traveled but foot, cart, falling ect. and time played. This range of statistics allows a more competitive side and allows you to compete against your friends to see who really is dedicated to the game . (Yes i know i am constantly discussing minecraft with my friends).

I have also heard that in a future update of the game that (The Mighty) Notch will be planning to make your stats available to been seen online on minecraft.net. This will allow you to pit your commitment to the game against others and most importantly easily compare your stats to your friends.

The addition of Stats in Beta 1.4 wasn't something people really saw coming but was extremely successful and I feel that it partners Challenges in redefining minecraft.

Achievemnts in Beta 1.5

One of the major improvements in Beta 1.5 was the implication of achievements. These achievements start from as simple as opening your inventory to as complicated as riding 1 kilometer on mine cart track. This means mining a lot of iron which can be quite a strenuous task especially for the new player.

Though at times extremely difficult this achievement system could be improved to give minecraft a story line and a purpose. It provides a great deal of direction and adds a completely new element to the game.

It also serves as a tutorial of sorts which man people such as PaulSoaresJr already provide on YouTube. It will give minecraft a wider appeal.

I am at the moment unsure about how and if the achievement system will be implemented in SMP. This could mean more specialised servers and could make SMP even more exciting.

Though there is alot of improvement needed in the achievement system before the final release of minecraft I believe more Mojang it is another step in the right direction towards making minecraft one of the defining games of this generation

1.5 Beta

Minecraft 1.5 Beta has just been released and it is all very exciting. The new features include:
  • Achievements
  • Stats
  • Water/Snow
  • Minecart Boosters
  • plus many more
I will detail each of these changes either later today or tomorrow. There is still alot more to make minecraft the finished game (11/11/11) but this update was a large step in the right direction
